Unfortunately, good Christian Music has become something of an oxymoron. This should not be the case. I can't believe that King David played the harp poorly. As I read it stated perfectly by the president of an American Christian college, "Christian is the most wonderful of all nouns, but usually the lamest of all adjectives."
I plan on migrating the music review blogs that had previously been posted on my tumblr (thejustmann.tumbr.com) over to this site's blog tab and starting anew. In the coming weeks and months, I intend to unpack some albums that fall into the CCM genre, yet are well done musically and lyrically. Those albums exist. That may be hard to believe, but there are quite a few very good Christian artists out there. You just have to search for them.
Trust me. Stay tuned.

Although I'm remiss in posting frequently, do not mistake my tardiness of mentioning the JAX2013 for lack of caring. Man oh man, we had a blast. I had the pleasure of playing with some incredible musicians and friends from Mission Athens Music (@mathensmusic), as well as some folks I met on this trip. This included my first experience of playing bass for hip hop/rap, which was a quality jam with Swoope (@mrswoope).
JAX2013 is a Campus Outreach event that takes place between Christmas and New Year's every year. And while I never attended, a number of my college friends went and loved it. It did not disappoint. Jacksonville is a great town, and making music with great guys and gals is one of my favorite things to do.
Coming out of that experience, my good friend Slade Adams (who played violin and guitar at my wedding - HEY I got married in December) and I decided we needed to play music together more often. We've begun the timeless art of sending GarageBand mp3s and chord charts back and forth via email. I'm excited to see where this leads.
Ideally, Mission Athens Music will be recording some demos in March, as well as finishing the broad strokes on some new tunes in the mean time.

Sooooo... John French and the Bastilles is playing The Melting Point on April 28th as a part of the Athens Americana Festival. I and we are incredibly excited to be involved with this festival. The Melting Point show on the 28th is the closing show for the festival, so it is an honor to be asked to play that night at all. Joe Pug will headline that show. If you are not familiar with Joe Pug, do yourself a favor and look him up pronto. My personal favorite album of his is The Great Despiser. Start there.
With names like Leon Russell, Deer Tick, The Corduroy Road, and Lera Lynn all playing during the festival, we're obviously pumped to kick out the jams at The Melting Point. See you there!

Last Thursday night, I was honored to play along with John French and the Bastilles at Eddie Owen's Red Clay Theater in Duluth, GA. Eddie, of course, is most famous for Eddie's Attic in Decatur, GA. We were lucky enough to headline and had a great time doing so. Threadbare, Brother and Sam Heilig both played before us and absolutely killed it. We look forward to coming back to Red Clay. It was a great experience.
All that being said, we're in the process of being booked more throughout the rest of the winter and spring. On the books already, we're opening for Ian Campbell and the Recruits for their CD Release show at the Drunken Unicorn in Atlanta on February 23.
Stay tuned for more exciting developments in the life of John French and the Bastilles and @thejustmann.

Yo yo yo!
Last Thursday night in Athens, GA at the illustrious Caledonia Lounge, John French and the Bastilles released our album What Wakes The Night. It will shortly be available on both iTunes and Spotify.
I'm very proud of this album. Paul Reeves of Domus Sound in Athens produced it for us and did a wizard of a job. John's songwriting is off the hook and all the tracks from start to finish are incredible, if I do say so myself.
We'll be promoting it pretty hard in the upcoming months. Stay tuned!

As I've mentioned, my favorite church in the whole world, Christ Community Church in Athens, GA recorded a CD this winter/spring and I was honored to be on it.
We released it the end of summer. I've very proud of it. You can purchase it here: www.itunes.com/missionathensmusic
Also, my band, John French and the Bastilles, just got our CDs printed after having them mixed and mastered. We are planning a release show for some time in November in Athens. Stay tuned for updates. I'm incredibly excited for us to share the music with everybody.
Catch you later.

Mission Athens Music (@mathensmusic) is releasing their album on August 14th! I'm glad I was able to be a part of that album and am incredibly proud of how it all turned out. The pre-orders ship in the next couple weeks, but for those who didn't pre-order, you can get the album on iTunes, CD Baby, Spotify, etc in August.
John French and the Bastilles' album is mixed, in the process of being mastered, and looking like it'll be released in September. In the meantime, we're opening for our pals from Easter Island (@eimusic) at the 40 Watt in Athens on July 14 for their CD release party. It'll be a blast and everyone should come out!
Peace out, Napoleon.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Kickstarter links I posted last month! Those have both been funded and it's pretty exciting... I'll be in Athens this coming week and weekend to play with John French and the Bastilles at the Melting Point on February 23rd. We're opening for our friend Emily Hearn. I'm staying in town afterwards to record The Bastilles stuff with Paul Reeves at Domus Sound all day Friday. I've worked with Paul before with Lauren St. Jane and the Dead Westerns, and I couldn't possibly be more psyched to work with him again.
The following weekend, I'm gonna be recording again, this time with Mission Athens Music and Aaron Slaten. We're gonna be doing the whole mobile studio situation and recording at a lake house in north Georgia. Brian T. Murphy of Red Mountain Church will be producing and possibly laying down some excellent keyboard parts as well.
All in all, a pretty exciting couple weeks for @thejustmann. (Follow me on tha twitter.)

I'm involved in 2 different projects that are on Kickstarter right now. One is my favorite church in the world, Christ Community Church, in Athens, GA. Their band is planning to record a worship CD and I'm lucky enough to be contributing. Check out the link here:
Also, I play bass in band called John French and the Bastilles. They are some of my bestest best friends, and we're trying to record a full length album in the next couple months. Here's that link:
I know times are tight, but if you love music, please considering contributing any amount of money to either project. Thanks!

Some great friends of mine just released an album. Over The Hills And Everywhere, a collaboration of Aaron Slaten, Emily Hearn, Justin Kimmel, and John French, came out today. I've played with all of these folks countless times. I'm on the record playing some bass as well.

Cast is off and hand is back!
Sorry for the lack of updates! I hadn't touched my website in a little while because my hand was in a cast and I couldn't play. But I'm back and better than ever now!
Please bear with me as I get everything up to date and current! If you need anything, please contact me!

I have a broken hand and may require surgery. A musician's nightmare. So I'll be out for a few weeks. I'm incredibly bummed about it. If you need me for a gig in mid-late October, I'd be happy to play, but anything before that I'm unfortunately incapacitated.

New site just got up and running! Thank you for your patience as I get everything working just right.
